More music headcanon time with Miri!

Dave obviously hasn’t been writing music forever. He had to have started somewhere. And I get the sense that this track was one of his early attempts at writing a full-length piece of music. It has a very processed, I-wrote-this-in-Finale-and-exported-the-playback feel to it, and something feels vaguely incomplete in it. It had to have been when he was still experimenting, figuring out his own style and what worked.

He sends it to John for feedback. John listens to it, mentions a few things, Dave pretends to disregard him but takes the advice to heart, and then forgets the piece exits.

A couple of months later, John sends him a new piano piece he’s been working on. And lo and behold, it’s Candles and Clockwork again, but with some of the dynamics and expression no simple music-writing program can really spit out. It’s the first piece one of them rewrites for the other, and it’s an eye-opener for Dave, how good his dumb old shitty (in his opinion) music can sound with John helping to breathe new life into it.

And so it goes.
